OR: is to look for either of the searches you typed. For example Manchester OR Barcelona
Quotation marks: is to narrow your search to find the typed words in the order typed.

File type: file type works when you are looking in Google for a specific file type. For example you are searching for
guitars and you want a power point about so you type guitar file type: ppt

.. : is to search results only from certain range of years. For example you want the results of the x games from 1985 to 2000 so you put X Games 1985..2000

~: is to give related searches to the search you gave for example you searched apple like this ~apple it will give you apple, orange, banana and more fruits.

3. Citing and Referencing

Differences between Paraphrasing, Summarizing and Quoting:
  • Paraphrasing:
    • o It’s a very detailed description of what is stated in a text but in your own words, it’s usually of the same length or more than the original text.
    • Summarizing:
      • o Summarizing is a very condensed version of the original, almost like paraphrasing but way more condensed and less detailed, it just explains the main ideas
      • Quoting:
        • o When you quote you are copying the exact same text that the author used, also in this case you have to site using the APA style to prevent plagiarism.
Similarities:
  • SIMILARITIES: All show information, both paraphrasing and summarizing use your own words, Paraphrase & Summary: about same length of the original, sentence structure and order of ideas can be changed. ALL: all of them need to be referenced and cited (bibliography)

4. In-text Citation and Paraphrasing
in -text citation
similarities
paraphrasing
  • The in-text citations are included in
the text in the exact way as the author wrote it.
both are referencing to the original author in the middle of the text
in paraphrasing the author quotes are changed into other words but it still reference to the author.
In-text citation
The in-text citation is a quote that is introduced to a text. This quote has the exact words of the phrase, as the ones of the original author. Also, the year of publication, and the last name of the author are included after the quote.

Here is an example of when an article has no author:
In Taiz, the Yemenese capital many protesters were killed during a peaceful protest, many were also injured by police forces. The al-Ahmar family, which is against the regime captured many buildings in the Hasaba neighborhood.Catherine Ashton, foregein policy chief of the EU condemned the use of force and gun power against civilians. Ashton also called for the United Nations to launch and independent assessment.

The author should be stated as this:

Short quotations
For short quotations the reference needs to have: The page number for the reference proceeded by "p.” Introduce the quotation with a signal phrase that includes the author's last name followed by the date of publication in parentheses.
Example: According to Jones (1998), "Students often had difficulty using APA style, especially when it was their first time" (p. 199).

Long quotations

Start the quotation on a new line, Type the entire quotation in another paragraph. Maintain double-spacing in the quote. The parenthetical citation should come after the closing punctuation
Example:
Jones's (1998) study found the following:

Students often had difficulty using APA style,

especially when it was their first time citing sources.

This difficulty could be attributed to the fact that many

students failed to purchase a style manual or to ask

their teacher for help. (p. 199)
